There’s no other live music experience in Huntsville quite like Concerts on the Dock.
It’s held on the loading dock of an early 1900s textile mill, repurposed a century later as a sprawling arts center, Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment. The free outdoor series attracts young, old, children, hippies, yuppies, hipsters, puppies, you name it. The shows are held Fridays in the fall and spring. Since the sets run 6 to 9 p.m., they end before many bar-gigs begin.
Less than 50 people were at the very first Concerts on the Dock, a 2007 performance by a local acoustic-rock trio called Dog And Pony Show. But the series soon grew to become one of Huntsville’s signature events, attracting average audiences of around 1,000.
Artists that have been featured in Rolling Stone magazine have performed at Concerts on the Dock. (Americana acts Shovels + Rope and Amythyst Kiah.) At least one band that went on to open shows for the actual Rolling Stones has too. (R&B explorers St. Paul & The Broken Bones.) But plenty of local bands also play Concerts on the Dock.
This fall’s Concerts on the Dock will be like no previous season. The lineup features all artists who record for Startlingly Fresh Records, a local indie label owned and operated by married couple Jim and Terri Cavender. Lowe Mill executive director Marcia Freeland came up with the idea. “We want to show the love to our local artists,” Freeland says. Freeland pitched the idea to Terri Cavender during a conga-drumming class both women take from a local percussionist. “It’s a big honor to be asked,” Terri says.
