Crafters from around Massac County and the rest of southern Illinois gathered Saturday, Oct. 22, at Dorothy Miller Park for the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Autumn Artisan & Plein Air Festival. In addition to hand-made items, which ranged from custom shirts to jewelry to seasonal décor, the day also featured air plants, ceramics and face painting. Massac County Farm Bureau was on hand with children’s activities. The chamber handed out cookies from Sissy’s: A Sweet Shoppe to the day’s first 50 customers. “Plein air” means “open air spaces.” After holding last year’s event on Market Street, organizer Ericca Arthur, incoming chamber president, did some further research and noticed similar festivals are held in grassy areas and decided that Dorothy Miller Park would be the perfect location. She is looking for the event to grow next year with artists, staple items from the area, more vendors, bands, a maker’s space and rides. “We want something where it’s local to pull in our residents,” she said. “The goal is to turn this into a community event.”
