Baker Mayfield says sold-out 'Off the Leash' shirts not his idea – Sports Business Journal

Panthers QB Baker Mayfield revealed during his weekly press conference yesterday that the “Off the Leash” T-shirts he is “hawking this week weren’t his idea,” according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. Mayfield: “Got a good team behind me and they put a few little hidden messages of like just my history, subliminal stuff in there. They do a good job and I just think people back home and people that have been following me for a long time like it. It’s just a fun thing to do.” Cabot writes Mayfield “didn’t even take credit for the design of the shirts,” which included a studded dog collar, a doghouse surrounded by bones and broken chains, “all a healthy dose of Browns trolling.” Mayfield: “I didn’t have any say in it. You know, I don’t get paid to make T-shirts. I get paid to play football and have fun with my buddies” (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 9/8). NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt said the T-shirts “are not some SB Nation (or) Panthers team” merchandise, but Mayfield is “pushing this himself.” Brandt: “Go to Baker Mayfield’s Twitter — he says this is the only legitimate T-shirt” (“Good Morning Football,” NFL Network, 9/8). FS1’s Skip Bayless said, “I cannot defend the selling of the commemorative T-shirts. … It scares me because it’s bad sign upon bad sign” (“Undisputed,” FS1, 9/8).
