ANDOVER, MA — Though the entry fee went up slightly on Tuesday, runners and walkers still have a chance to sign up for the 35th annual Feaster Five Road Race later this month, which is billed as the largest Thanksgiving Day road race in Massachusetts.
The race, which is sponsored by the Merrimack Valley Striders running club, is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, in Downtown Andover. The event features a 5K, 5-mile run and a Kids K, the latter will take place at 7:45 a.m. Participants also have a chance to run/walk virtually.
One of the event’s biggest traditions, the pie distribution, is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon.
Registration is available online. As of Nov. 1, the race costs $45 for adults, $35 for children under 12 interested in running the 5K and $10 for those participating in the Kid K. T-shirts are guaranteed for the first 5,000 registrants —the race can draw up to 10,000 — and each little athlete will receive a commemorative medal and a custom short sleeve Kids K technical shirt.
Those interested in sponsoring an individual runner or a team can do so online.
Proceeds from the event will be distributed among four charities: The Merrimack Valley YMCA, Bellesini Academy, Merrimack Valley Striders Scholarship Fund, and Groundwork Lawrence, Inc. (GWL).
As of Tuesday, $$3,954.76 already had been raised for those organizations, according to the event website.
“This Thanksgiving will be my 31st Feaster Five,” longtime event participant Emily Goldsmith said, according to the Feaster Five Facebook page. “In 1991 my husband and I, seasoned runners from Keene, New Hampshire, made our way down to Brickstone Square, same-day registration in a much smaller race, to begin the holiday with a 5K run and to bring home an apple pie to our family, residents of Andover. It was a great way to start the day! What started as a new Thanksgiving paradigm for us eventually became a family tradition for our extended family.”
Goldsmith continued: “I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to begin Thanksgiving Day in such a positive way.”
